Senegal FL TDIA impact story

In the impact videos below, Senegal and South Africa Flying Labs share their journeys of turning data into action, illuminating the impact of the global Network. By harnessing technology and prioritizing stakeholder engagement, Flying Labs are reshaping disaster management, breaking stereotypes, and empowering their communities to thrive.

The holy city of Touba in Senegal attracts millions of people every year during the Grand Magal de Touba festival. Unfortunately, the festival coincides with the rainy season, and flooding creates safety and sanitation challenges, making the city nearly impossible to navigate. In 2022, Senegal Flying Labs got to work, aiming to create a mapping system using drones to enhance disaster prevention and management.

Further down in South Africa, torrential rains led to devastating floods in 2022 and 2023, and South Africa Flying Labs responded promptly, showcasing not only the effectiveness of drones in disaster management but also the transformative power of community involvement. In the vulnerable Alexandria township, they engaged unemployed youth in the aftermath of the disaster, bringing technology directly to the local level and empowering the community in remarkable ways.
