Framework Background

The Turning Data into Action (TDIA) framework was developed based on real-world experiences and insights from drone-data projects conducted by Flying Labs. In 2021, the initial framework and resources were built on firsthand accounts of successes, challenges, and setbacks from 12 projects led by Flying Labs. Since 2022, it has continuously been improved and expanded, based on feedback from Flying Labs applying the framework in their projects.

Why a framework to turn data into action is needed

In today’s data-driven world, organizations are increasingly able to collect and produce large amounts of data thanks to technological advancements and growing expertise. While data has the potential to transform decision-making, drive innovation, and shape strategic outcomes, its effective use requires more than just technical skills.

The systematic capacity to create actionable data insights and turn them into impactful outcomes more systematically asks for an intentional focus on people, and not just technology.

What the framework contains and how it's used

The heart of the framework focuses on intentional and systematic stakeholder and community engagement. In sum: focus on people first, then technology or data. The framework contains:

  • A handbook, complemented by an online course
  • Tools and resources
  • A checklist, to follow the various steps easily during a project
  • In-person support from WeRobotics' team for MEL, storytelling and stakeholder strategies

Flying Labs can use the framework freely for any and all of their drone data projects. WeRobotics proposes  microgrants to Flying Labs, so that they can familiarize themselves with the framework, and learn how to adopt it by doing.

Framework outcomes

The framework has become a catalyst for successful drone data projects. It guarantees that for Flying Labs' drone data projects, people lead and technology follows

Fun fact: the majority of current collaboration and solution spaces were born through a TDIA microgrant.
